Apricot is the fruit of the apricot tree; its cultivation originated in the regions of northeastern China and was imported to Italy in Roman times from Greece. The Apricot has a yellow-orange color, depending on the variety, with slight red hues and a velvety skin and fleshy flesh. It is a popular summer fruit because it has a sweet, but also somewhat sour taste that lends itself well to being eaten alone or together with other foods, including savory ones. Inside it has an almond-shaped edible seed, protected by a bony part. The main producing countries of this tasty fruit are Turkey, Russia, Spain, Italy and the United States. In Italy, the Apricot is mainly produced in the southern regions. Through the conquests of Alexander the Great, it reached the Mediterranean regions. The Apricot was known and loved by the ancient Greeks and was considered by the ancient Romans to be a rare and exotic fruit, a source of iron and vitamin A, which contributes to the maintenance of normal vision.
